Queensland has some amazing features about it but it can be really expensive. If you are trying to budget travel it may even seem impossible. There are plenty of beaches, and tanning is great, but people always draw a blank when it comes to other free things. Thanks to our massive love for Queensland, we have made a list of free activities from the Gold Coast to Cape Tribulation that isn’t sitting on a beach.

Gold Coast

  1. Whale watching from headlands (May to October)
  2. Currumbin Rock Pools
  3. Festivals

  1. CityHopper Boat 
  2. Comedy at the powerhouse (Fridays 1 hour)
  3. Watch the Sun-rise at Mt Coot-Tha

Sunshine Coast

  1. Botanical Gardens
  2. Go fishing
  3. Swim in waterfalls (Hinterland)

Where to stay: Noosa Flashpackers

Fraser Island

  1. Check out the view from Indian Head
  2. Hang out on the dunes at Lake Wabby 
  3. Investigate the Maheno shipwreck

  1. Kalki Moon Distilling and Brewing Company FREE Gin Tasting 
  2. Explore caves in Cania Gorge National Park 
  3. Try to find all the murals around town

  2. Try to spot a platypus at Broken River

  2. Clean the reef with Eco Barge Clean Seas Inc.
  3. Learn to Sail – Whitsundays Yacht Club Wednesdays from 3-7 pm

  1. Jezzine Barracks for history buffs and scenic addicts alike
  2. Hike Paluma, an ideal getaway 1.5 hours north of Townsville
  3. Palmetun Park, dedicated entirely to its palm trees.

  1. Get fit with free classes on the Esplanade
  2. Hike Walsh’s Pyramid
  3. Swim in a volcanic crater; Lake Eacham
